Overview
Nikšić sits on a broad karst plateau in north-central Montenegro, at around 630 meters above sea level. Though historically better known for beer and steel, the area is increasingly recognized as a future zone for viticulture, with small vineyards rooted in limestone hills and sheltered valleys including the tiny Nudo viticulture area.
The climate is cooler and more continental than the Skadar Lake basin, with marked diurnal shifts that preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Indigenous Vranac and Krstač are joined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on karst and alluvial soils, pointing to a promising highland style.
Key Varietals
- VranacThe late-ripening indigenous red retains elegance here, offering bright acidity alongside its signature dark fruit.
- KrstačA local white that finds freshness and floral clarity in the plateau's cooler nights and limestone soils.
- Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that benefits from the temperature swings, adding cassis and graphite complexity.
- ChardonnayProducing crisp, mineral whites with citrus and stone-fruit notes in the highland microclimate.
