Overview
The Niagara Peninsula lies between Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment in southern Ontario. The lake stores summer warmth and releases it into autumn, while the escarpment shelters vineyards from cold northerly winds, creating a long, moderate growing season ideal for cool-climate varieties.
Niagara is best known internationally for Icewine, the intensely sweet dessert wine made from grapes frozen naturally on the vine. Inniskillin, Jackson-Triggs, and Peller Estates are household names, while smaller estates excel with Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc across ten official sub-appellations.
