Overview
Negotin sits in the Timok Valley where Serbia meets Romania and Bulgaria, a landscape of low hills, river terraces and dramatic gorges carved by the Danube. Viticulture is concentrated on the Negotin Plain and surrounding low hills between 150 and 200 meters above sea level, with some vineyards climbing toward the Stara Planina foothills. The continental climate brings very warm summers, cold winters and about 265 sunny days, making it ideal for full-bodied reds.
By the late nineteenth century, Negotinska Krajina held more vineyards than any other Serbian region, and villages such as Rogljevo, Štubik and Smedovac still preserve labyrinthine rock cellars called pivnice. Vranac produces deep, dark wines with blackberry, plum and chocolate, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds cassis and firm tannins. Indigenous varieties such as Začinak and Bagrina remain rare treasures in the hands of a new generation of boutique producers.
