Nanyuki Vineyards
Central Kenya, in Laikipia County, on the northwestern foothills of Mount Kenya

Nanyuki

A cool, semi-arid highland town beneath Mount Kenya where altitude-driven vineyards are finding their footing.

Overview

Nanyuki sits at the foot of Mount Kenya in Laikipia County, at an elevation of about 1,947 meters above sea level on the mountain's drier northwestern side. The town is a gateway for climbers and safari travelers, but its cool days, cold nights, and strong sunshine also create conditions that suit high-altitude viticulture. Central Kenya grape-growing guides include Nanyuki alongside Thika and Murang'a as a promising zone.

The climate is semi-arid and strongly influenced by altitude, with daytime temperatures around 25 to 27 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows of 8 to 13 degrees Celsius. Rainfall averages 600 to 900 millimeters annually in a bimodal pattern, making irrigation valuable for consistent grape quality. Volcanic and black-cotton soils appear across the landscape, with the best vineyard sites on free-draining slopes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc are the varieties most commonly planted.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red that benefits from Nanyuki's cool nights and intense high-altitude sunlight.
  • ShirazA peppery, medium-bodied red that develops bright fruit and spice in the cool semi-arid air.
  • Sauvignon BlancA crisp, citrusy white that expresses the sharp diurnal temperature shift at the foot of Mount Kenya.
  • Chenin BlancA fresh, adaptable white that retains acidity in Nanyuki's cool highland conditions.
