Mosel Vineyards
Steep slate slopes along the Mosel, Saar, and Ruwer rivers

Mosel

Germany's most famous Riesling region, where dizzying slate terraces produce wines of crystalline elegance.

Overview

The Mosel is Germany's most prestigious Riesling heartland, stretching along the winding Mosel River and its tributaries, the Saar and Ruwer. Its vineyards climb some of the world's steepest slopes, many terraced with ancient slate walls that capture sunlight and radiate warmth back to the vines at night. This dramatic landscape, combined with a cool continental climate moderated by the river, yields Rieslings renowned for their filigree texture, racy acidity, and unmistakable slate minerality.

Mosel wines span a remarkable range of styles, from featherlight Kabinett and off-dry Spätlese to powerful dry Grosses Gewächs. The region has cultivated vines since Roman times, and its historic estates continue to define the global benchmark for elegant, age-worthy white wine. Visitors are drawn to postcard villages such as Bernkastel-Kues, Piesport, and Cochem, where medieval wine culture thrives.

Key Varietals

  • RieslingThe noble signature grape, producing ethereal whites with floral perfume, citrus fruit, and piercing slate minerality across every sweetness level.
  • Müller-ThurgauA reliable early-ripening cross that gives fresh, approachable whites with gentle floral and orchard-fruit notes.
  • ElblingAn ancient variety on the Upper Mosel, often made into crisp, tangy still wines or refreshing sparkling Sekt.
  • SpätburgunderA small but growing red presence, yielding pale, fragrant Pinot Noir with red cherry and stony nuances.
