Moquegua Vineyards
Southern Peru, in the Moquegua and Osmore river valleys between Arequipa and Tacna

Moquegua

A sunny southern valley where old Criolla vines, boutique Pisco, and emerging high-altitude vineyards shape a distinctive terroir.

Overview

Moquegua lies between Arequipa and Tacna in one of Peru's most historically significant southern corridors for wine and Pisco. The valley follows the Moquegua and Osmore rivers, with vineyards planted between 400 and 650 meters above sea level and a growing interest in even higher sites in the upper valley. The town of Moquegua preserves a strong colonial wine heritage, with old bodegas such as Cerrillos and Ghersi continuing a tradition that supplied miners and merchants for centuries.

The climate is warm, sunny, and dry, with average temperatures around 17 degrees Celsius, low humidity, and cool winter nights that give vines proper rest. Soils are diverse and include sedimentary, volcanic, brown clay, loam, sand, and pebble deposits. The region specializes in traditional Pisco grapes and is increasingly recognized for its boutique Pisco scene, while newer plantings of red and white varieties point to a broader future for Moquegua still wines.

Key Varietals

  • QuebrantaThe signature non-aromatic Criolla grape, forming the backbone of Moquegua's traditional Puro Pisco style.
  • MollarAn old, soft-tannined Criolla variety used in light reds, blends, and delicate Pisco expressions.
  • AlbillaA refined aromatic white grape that yields balanced, floral wines and elegant Piscos.
  • MoscatelA fragrant Muscat variety prized for aromatic Piscos and sweet, floral wine styles.
