Montevideo

Overview

Montevideo is unique among world capitals for having active vineyards within and around its metropolitan area. The department holds some of Uruguay's oldest European vine plantings and remains an important production zone, with wineries such as Bodegas Carrau and Bouza operating near the city. The breezy Atlántida area has become a particularly noted subzone for fresh, coastal-influenced wines.

The climate is maritime and mild, with enough rainfall throughout the year that irrigation is generally unnecessary. Soils are clay-based with sand content from the river and calcareous deposits, creating a mix of freshness and structure. Montevideo produces accessible yet savory Tannat, crisp whites and an increasing range of innovative varieties and styles.
