Overview
The Mikulov wine sub-region is the warmest and most scenic of Moravia, centered on the town of Mikulov beneath the white limestone cliffs of the Pálava Hills. The area is a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape of vineyards, castles, and wine cellars, and its soils range from deep loess to calcareous rocky slopes.
The region is famous for aromatic and mineral white wines, particularly Ryzlink vlašský, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and the local Pálava grape. The VOC Mikulovsko appellation protects wines that express the sub-region's distinctive character. Small amounts of Pinot Noir are also grown on the warmest sites.
