Matabeleland

Overview

Matabeleland encompasses Matabeleland North and South in western Zimbabwe, a vast, sparsely populated area of semi-arid bushveld, teak forests, and Kalahari sands. Rainfall is low and erratic, livestock ranching dominates, and crop production depends on irrigation schemes along the Gwayi, Shangani, and other rivers.

Viticulture here would be an extreme, irrigation-dependent prospect, best suited to heat- and drought-tolerant varieties on carefully managed sites. The light, sandy Kalahari soils drain freely but hold little fertility, while riverine pockets offer deeper alluvium. With water secured, the intense sunshine and dry air could produce concentrated, sun-ripened wines.
