Masvingo

Overview

Masvingo lies in the drier south-east of Zimbabwe, ranging from the highveld around Masvingo town to the low-lying Save and Limpopo valleys. Historical records show that early vine plantings were distributed to areas including Hippo Valley and the Eastern Districts, and today the province relies heavily on irrigation from Lake Mutirikwi, the Save River, and the Tokwe-Mukosi dam.

The climate is warm and semi-arid in the lowveld, with hot summers and mild winters. Grape growing here would depend on irrigation, heat-tolerant varieties, and careful canopy management to avoid sun damage. The red, well-drained fersiallitic soils and riverine alluvium offer promising sites for vines where water is available.
