Overview
Mashonaland West covers the northern highveld and the Zambezi Valley in north-western Zimbabwe. The highveld portion enjoys fertile red and brown loams and reliable summer rainfall, while the Zambezi Valley floor is much hotter and drier, famous for Lake Kariba and wildlife parks rather than vineyards.
The better vineyard prospects lie on the cooler plateau and on irrigated pockets near the valley floor. Warm days, good sunshine, and deep, well-drained granitic soils would suit both white and red varieties, provided growers manage the risk of summer rains and fungal pressure during the humid growing season.
