Maldonado

Uruguay's premium Atlantic coast, where ancient granitic soils and cool ocean breezes redefine Tannat and Albariño.

Overview

Maldonado has emerged as the country's most exciting premium wine region, rising from near-zero plantings two decades ago to an internationally recognized fine-wine destination. The region centers on the hills around Garzón and José Ignacio, just a short drive from the resort town of Punta del Este. Bodega Garzón, named Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year in 2018, put Maldonado on the global map with its meticulously farmed estate and ambitious hospitality.

The terroir is defined by ancient granitic and crystalline bedrock, poor rocky soils and excellent drainage, all moderated by cool Atlantic breezes. The result is wines of energy, minerality and finesse, including powerful Tannat, saline Albariño, elegant Cabernet Franc and promising Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The long, slow growing season preserves acidity and produces some of Uruguay's most cellar-worthy bottlings.

Key Varietals

  • TannatA structured, mineral expression of Uruguay's flagship red, with fine tannins and dark berry depth.
  • AlbariñoA crisp, saline white that captures the Atlantic freshness of Maldonado's granitic slopes.
  • Cabernet FrancAn elegant red variety that flourishes in the cool maritime climate and rocky soils.
  • MerlotA rounded red that adds plush fruit and balance to blends from this premium coast.
