Macedonia

Overview

Macedonia is Greece's most important northern wine region, stretching from the Pindos mountains eastward toward Thrace. Its landscape of smooth plains, mountain slopes and semi-mountainous terroirs supports a temperate Mediterranean climate cooled by proximity to the Aegean and Balkan waters. The region is home to several flagship PDO zones, including Naoussa, Amynteo and Goumenissa.

The noble red Xinomavro reaches perhaps its most structured form here, producing age-worthy wines often compared to Nebbiolo. White wines from Malagousia, Assyrtiko and Athiri add perfume and freshness, while international varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah and Merlot thrive in the Drama and Kavala areas.
