Maasvallei Limburg

Overview

Maasvallei Limburg was approved in 2017 as a unique cross-border protected designation covering roughly 150 square kilometers on both sides of the Meuse River in Belgian and Dutch Limburg. The area's sand and gravel soils were deposited from Alpine, Jura, Vosges, and Ardennes sediments over hundreds of thousands of years, creating a free-draining, mildly warm microclimate.

The appellation authorizes Acolon, Auxerrois, Chardonnay, Dornfelder, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Siegerrebe. It represents a new chapter for both countries, with growers producing still and sparkling wines from vineyards scattered between Maastricht and the Hasselt region.
