Loudoun County

Overview

Loudoun County is the heart of northern Virginia wine country, often called D.C.'s Wine Country. The landscape is one of rolling hills, historic estates, and small valleys nestled between the Potomac River to the northeast and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. Much of the county falls within the Middleburg Virginia AVA, established in 2012, which recognizes the area's distinctive granite and sandstone-derived soils and moderate climate.

Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot are the leading red varieties, often blended in Bordeaux-style wines. Viognier and Chardonnay lead the whites, while Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, and Norton are also grown. The region has evolved rapidly in recent decades, with experienced winemakers increasingly focusing on dry, terroir-driven wines.
