Litoměřice

Northern Bohemia's basalt vineyards, producing mineral whites on the slopes of the Central Highlands.

Overview

The Litoměřice wine sub-region lies in the Central Bohemian Uplands, covering vineyards around Litoměřice, Most, Roudnice nad Labem, Kadaň, Ústí nad Labem, and Louny. The region is one of the northernmost wine areas in Europe, and its vineyards are planted on the weathered basalt and tufa slopes of extinct volcanoes.

The volcanic soils give the wines a distinct mineral character. White varieties dominate, including Riesling, Graševina, Müller-Thurgau, and Pinot Blanc, while small amounts of Pinot Noir are also grown. The area has a long viticultural history and is becoming increasingly popular for wine tourism from nearby Prague.

Key Varietals

  • RieslingA high-acid, mineral white that reflects the region's volcanic soils.
  • GraševinaWelschriesling, a crisp, neutral white widely planted in northern Bohemia.
  • Müller-ThurgauA floral, early-ripening white suited to Bohemia's cool climate.
  • Pinot NoirA light, red-fruit red from the warmest basalt slopes.
