Overview

Lesser Poland centers on Kraków and the Vistula River valley, the oldest documented wine region in the country. The Beskid Mountains create a partial rain shadow, and the loess and limestone soils around Kraków, Tarnów, and Sandomierz provide an elegant foundation for both white and red grapes.

The modern scene mixes boutique farmhouse wineries, natural-wine cellars in Kraków's Kazimierz district, and emerging wine routes along the Vistula. Growers favor aromatic hybrids and early-ripening Vitis vinifera, and many also craft small lots of berry wines from the region's abundant forests.
