Kurzeme Vineyards
Western Latvia, along the Baltic Sea coast around Liepāja, Kuldīga, and Talsi

Kurzeme

Latvia's mildest wine coast, where Baltic breezes temper cold-hardy reds, apple wines, and berry ciders.

Overview

Kurzeme occupies Latvia's western shoreline and benefits from the strongest maritime influence in the country. The Baltic Sea keeps winters milder and summers cooler than inland, while the long summer days at this latitude help slow-ripening varieties gain flavor. Vineyards and orchards are concentrated near Liepāja, Kuldīga, and Talsi, often on gently rolling land dotted with forests and coastal lagoons.

This is Latvia's most grape-focused corner after Zemgale, with producers working early-ripening cold-hardy hybrids and a wide range of fruit wines. Zilga and Rondo lead the small red-wine sector, while local apple orchards and berry plots supply crisp ciders and aromatic fruit wines that capture the region's cool, maritime character.

Key Varietals

  • ZilgaA Latvian-bred cold-hardy red hybrid that ripens early and produces light, fruity red wines.
  • RondoA dark-skinned, cold-tolerant hybrid used for fresh reds and rosés in Kurzeme's coastal sites.
  • AppleCoastal orchards and wineries craft crisp apple wines and ciders that anchor Kurzeme's fruit-wine scene.
  • BlackcurrantHardy blackcurrants yield richly colored, tart berry wines suited to the damp, cool west coast.
