Krishna Valley Vineyards
Maharashtra and Karnataka, along the Krishna River basin

Krishna Valley

One of India's most fertile grape belts, where the Krishna River feeds a sprawling viticultural tradition.

Overview

Krishna Valley spans a vast area of the Krishna River basin, covering districts in Maharashtra such as Sangli, Solapur, and Satara, as well as northern Karnataka including Bijapur and Bagalkot. It accounts for a major share of India's grape-growing area and is a center for both table and wine grapes.

The hot tropical climate, with maximum temperatures around 42 degrees Celsius and minimums near 8 degrees Celsius, combined with fertile soils and modern irrigation, produces highly ripe fruit. The Krishna Valley Wine Park in Palus, Sangli, supports research, training, and agro-tourism in the region.

Key Varietals

  • Sauvignon BlancCrisp and citrusy, widely planted across the valley.
  • ShirazBold and fruit-forward, thriving in the warm inland climate.
  • Cabernet SauvignonStructured and dark-fruited, suited to the valley's ripening conditions.
  • Chenin BlancVersatile and fresh, used in still, sparkling, and dessert styles.
