Overview
Krasnodar Krai is Russia's southernmost wine region and the undisputed center of domestic viticulture, accounting for more than 60 percent of the country's vineyards and total wine production. Viticulture is concentrated in four zones: Anapa-Taman, Black Sea, South-Piedmont and Central, with the most prized sites lying on the Taman Peninsula at roughly 45 degrees north latitude. The climate is moderately continental across most of the krai, shading into a semi-dry Mediterranean climate along the Black Sea coast from Anapa to Tuapse, giving growers long, sunny autumns and a growing season of 220 to 240 days.
Vineyards sit on well-drained clay, gravel-limestone and carbonate chernozem soils, often with chalk and shale subsoils that lend a marked mineral character to the wines. Historic estates such as Abrau-Durso, Fanagoria, Kuban-Vino and Chateau le Grand Vostock have made the region synonymous with Russian sparkling, still and fortified wines. The combination of sea breezes, mountain shelter and low rainfall helps produce concentrated, balanced fruit.
