Overview
The Itata Valley lies in southern Chile's Ñuble Region, roughly 400 kilometers south of Santiago. It is one of the country's oldest wine areas, with vines planted by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. Many of those País vines survive today as dry-farmed, bush-trained old vines on granitic hillsides.
For years Itata was overlooked in favor of Chile's more famous valleys, but the natural wine movement has brought renewed attention to its rustic, fresh, and authentic wines. Producers such as Pedro Parra, Clos de Fous, and Rogue Vine work with old-vine País, Cinsault, and Moscatel to produce distinctive, low-intervention wines.
