Overview

Hemel-en-Aarde, Afrikaans for Heaven and Earth, is a set of three wards within the Walker Bay district, lying in a narrow valley behind the coastal town of Hermanus. First planted in the 1970s, the region quickly gained acclaim for wines that rival cooler New World benchmarks. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, driven by the icy Benguela Current, keeps summers mild and extends the growing season.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay dominate, together accounting for much of South Africa's premium cool-climate plantings. The valley's ancient Bokkeveld shale and decomposed granite soils, combined with abundant winter rainfall, allow dry farming in many places. The result is wines of finesse, salinity, and restrained power that have captured international attention.
