Haspengouw

Overview

Haspengouw lies in the province of Limburg between Hasselt, Sint-Truiden, Herk-de-Stad, and the Dutch border. Granted appellation status in 1999, it is now the most extensive wine region in Flanders, with dozens of professional growers working vineyards on wind-deposited loess soils that drain well and retain warmth.

The grape mix reflects Belgium's cool climate: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, and Müller-Thurgau dominate, while Merlot, Dornfelder, and Kerner add breadth. Haspengouw's fruit orchards and castle estates make it a natural destination for cycling wine routes and harvest festivals.
