Overview
Hardanger is Norway's fruit bowl and its only cider region with a protected geographical indication, Sider frå Hardanger. Villages such as Ulvik, Lofthus and Ullensvang line the fjord with steep, sun-catching orchards that have been cultivated since medieval times and now host more than a dozen commercial cideries.
The fjord creates a mild microclimate with cool summers, relatively mild winters, and long summer days that ripen apples to high acidity and concentrated flavour. The classic cider quartet of Aroma, Gravenstein, Discovery and Summerred dominates, while cherries, plums and pears also appear in fruit wines. Soils are mineral-rich and free-draining, formed from glacial deposits, schist and granite on the steep slopes.
