Overview
Gotland lies far out in the Baltic Sea and offers a wine terroir quite different from the mainland. It is the sunniest and one of the driest spots in Sweden, with a late spring and a growing season shaped by maritime air. The entire island is built on limestone, and vineyards such as Gute Vingård and Långmyre Vineri exploit the free-draining, calcareous soils that vines love.
The island's producers farm organically or biodynamically and focus on PIWI hybrids that can handle the cool nights and windy exposure. Gotland whites are typically bright and mineral, while the reds and rosés are light and fresh. With a fast-growing reputation and a unique island wine culture, Gotland is one of Sweden's most exciting emerging wine destinations.
