Genève Vineyards
Western Switzerland around Lake Geneva and the Rhône and Arve rivers

Genève

A historic lake region where Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Chasselas thrive on glacial moraines.

Overview

Genève is Switzerland's third-largest wine region, with about 1,410 hectares of vineyards reaching almost to the city center. The canton's vineyards sit on glacial moraines deposited between Lake Geneva and the Jura Mountains, with the lake moderating temperatures and reflecting light onto the slopes.

Gamay is the signature red, giving fresh, fruity wines, while Pinot Noir and Chasselas add balance and Chardonnay and Pinot Gris bring international polish. Genève also claims Gamaret and Garanoir, two modern Swiss crossings widely planted here.

Key Varietals

  • GamayThe regional specialty, producing vibrant, red-berry reds with peppery freshness and approachability.
  • Pinot NoirAn elegant red delivering cherry, violet, and silky tannins from the canton's varied soils.
  • ChasselasA crisp, mineral white that reflects the calcareous and gravelly moraine terroirs near the lake.
  • ChardonnayA barrel-friendly white showing ripe orchard fruit and balanced acidity in Geneva's temperate climate.
