Fruška Gora

Overview

Fruška Gora rises as a lone island mountain from the flat Srem plain in northern Vojvodina, bordered by the Danube to the north and the Sava to the south. Vineyards climb its southeastern and northern slopes between 90 and 270 meters above sea level, where a mild, humid continental climate is softened by the Danube's reflective warmth. Emperor Probus is credited with planting vines here in the third century, and medieval monasteries kept viticulture alive through centuries of change.

The region is celebrated for aromatic whites and the unique Bermet aromatized dessert wine, which carries a long tradition in the Baroque town of Sremski Karlovci. Grašac, known internationally as Welschriesling, is the most widely planted white and yields crisp, mineral-driven wines, while Tamjanika adds heady floral perfume. Chardonnay has also won international acclaim, and Cabernet Sauvignon ripens reliably on the warmer lower slopes.
