Overview

Franschhoek, meaning French Corner, was settled by Huguenot refugees in 1688 and remains one of South Africa's most picturesque wine valleys. Vineyards run along the valley floor and climb the surrounding mountains, creating a compact but varied wine region. The town has become a culinary destination, with award-winning restaurants lining a main street framed by Cape Dutch architecture.

The district is best known for Chardonnay and Methode Cap Classique sparkling wines, as well as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Semillon. Its combination of warm days, cool mountain air, and diverse soils gives wines of perfume, freshness, and finesse. Visitors often travel by wine tram, hopping between historic estates and boutique producers.
