Overview

The Finger Lakes region centers on eleven long, narrow glacial lakes whose remarkable depth creates a thermal-moderating effect essential to viticulture. Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, and Canandaigua lakes are the heart of the wine country. The deep water absorbs summer warmth and releases it slowly into autumn, extending the growing season and protecting vines from spring frost and winter cold.

Riesling is the flagship variety, produced in styles from bone-dry to lusciously sweet and even ice wine. Cabernet Franc is the leading red, while Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer also perform well. The region has transformed from a producer of native and hybrid wines into one of the most respected cool-climate destinations in North America.
