Elgin Vineyards
High-altitude valley in the Hottentots-Holland Mountains, south-east of Cape Town

Elgin

South Africa's coolest wine district, where altitude and Atlantic breezes craft crystalline whites and Burgundian reds.

Overview

Elgin sits in a bowl-shaped valley ringed by the Hottentots-Holland, Groenland, and Kogelberg mountains, about 70 kilometres south-east of Cape Town. Once known for apples and pears, the valley has become one of the most exciting cool-climate wine districts in the country. Vineyards lie between 250 and 500 metres above sea level, where southerly Atlantic winds and mountain gaps keep temperatures down.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the signature grapes, often compared to Burgundy for their precision and restraint. Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and cool-climate Syrah also thrive. The iron-rich Bokkeveld shale soils, mixed with sandstone and decomposed granite, give the wines a distinctive mineral thread and bright natural acidity.

Key Varietals

  • ChardonnayThe white flagship, producing restrained, mineral-driven wines with citrus, white peach, and subtle oak.
  • Pinot NoirElegant and Burgundian in style, with red cherry, wild strawberry, forest floor, and fine tannins.
  • Sauvignon BlancCrisp and aromatic, balancing grapefruit, green herbs, and a flinty mineral edge.
  • RieslingA regional specialty, offering lime, green apple, and slate-like minerality in dry and off-dry styles.
