Dzūkija

Overview

Dzūkija, also known as Dainava, is Lithuania's southeastern woodland, famous for its vast pine forests, mushrooms, berries, and distinctive folk songs. The region stretches from Alytus south toward the Belarus and Poland borders, with the spa town of Druskininkai as its best-known destination.

Viticulture in the conventional sense is limited here, but the region's abundance of wild and cultivated berries makes it a natural home for fruit wines and berry-based drinks. Small farms and artisan producers work with blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, and forest honeys, while a handful of growers test cold-hardy grape hybrids on sheltered sandy plots.
