Overview
Durbanville lies in the Tygerberg Hills just north of Cape Town, making it one of the most accessible wine areas in South Africa. Vineyards sit between 250 and 400 metres above sea level, only about 12 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. Cooling southeasterly breezes from False Bay and moist sea mists slow ripening and preserve acidity, giving the ward a distinctly cool-climate character.
Sauvignon Blanc is the undisputed star, produced in both wooded and unwooded styles with tropical, herbaceous, and mineral expressions. The ward also turns out capable Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep, well-drained shale-derived soils store winter rainfall, reducing the need for summer irrigation and allowing grapes to ripen evenly.
