Overview
Denizli's wine reputation rests largely on the Çal district, a high inland plateau around 850 to 900 metres above sea level where the climate shifts from Mediterranean coastal influence toward a warm, dry continental character. Significant diurnal temperature variation and a short vegetation period help preserve acidity in the grapes.
Clay-loam and calcareous soils dominate, with fertile alluvial pockets along the Büyük Menderes River and its tributaries. The local Çalkarası grape is the star, used for fresh rosés and light reds, while Öküzgözü, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also perform well in the area's modern wineries.
