Crmnica Vineyards
Southern Montenegro, along the western shore of Lake Skadar in the municipality of Bar

Crmnica

The historic soul of Montenegrin wine, where Lake Skadar and ancient stone cellars shape deeply rooted Vranac.

Overview

Crmnica lies on the western edge of Lake Skadar, a landscape of small family vineyards, stone hamlets, and centuries-old wine traditions. It is widely regarded as the birthplace of Montenegrin Vranac, with written records of local winemaking stretching back more than three centuries and early 20th-century exhibitions awarding Crmnica's wines international medals.

The lake's reflective surface and surrounding hills create a warm, sheltered microclimate that extends the growing season, while karst and alluvial soils provide excellent drainage. Winemaking here is intimate and artisanal, producing concentrated reds from Vranac and Kratošija alongside small lots of Chardonnay and Krstač.

Key Varietals

  • VranacThe region's emblematic red, producing intense ruby wines with dark cherry, blackberry, and Mediterranean herb notes.
  • KratošijaAn indigenous relative of Vranac that gives medium-bodied, fragrant reds with red berry and spice character.
  • ChardonnayGrown in small parcels, offering fresh, rounded whites that balance the region's red wine reputation.
  • KrstačA native white producing dry, mineral wines that pair naturally with lake fish and local cheeses.
