Central Otago

The world's most southerly commercial wine region, famed for intense, mineral Pinot Noir.

Overview

Central Otago sits at about 45 degrees south in the inland South Island, making it the world's most southerly commercial wine region. Shielded from maritime weather by the Southern Alps and the Remarkables, it is New Zealand's only true continental wine region: hot, dry summers with desiccating nor'wester winds, cold snowy winters, and extreme day-night temperature swings. Vineyards lie mostly between 200 and 450 metres on ancient schist bedrock, with sub-regions including Gibbston, Bannockburn, Bendigo, the Cromwell Basin, Wanaka, and Alexandra.

Pinot Noir accounts for roughly three-quarters of plantings and is the undisputed flagship, ranging from pale, perfumed Gibbston styles to dense, structured Bannockburn wines. Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Gewürztraminer make up a small but serious aromatic white portfolio, often showing schist-driven minerality and bright acidity. Frost is the main viticultural challenge, and harvest runs late into autumn.

Key Varietals

  • Pinot NoirThe star grape, giving wines of vivid dark cherry, plum, spice, and schist minerality with silky to structured tannins.
  • ChardonnayA concentrated white that combines stone fruit richness with bright acidity and a stony, mineral finish.
  • RieslingA high-acid aromatic white, typically off-dry to dry, with lime, white flower, and flinty schist character.
  • Pinot GrisA textural, aromatic white showing pear, spice, and a gently saline, mineral edge.
