Overview
Central Greece is the country's largest and most diverse viticultural area, covering Attica, Boeotia, Evia, Phocis, Phthiotida and Aetolia-Acarnania. Complex topography and the Pindos range create numerous mesoclimates, from hot, dry plains to cooler mountain and coastal sites. The region produces a wide spectrum of PGI wines and remains the historic home of Retsina.
Savatiano dominates plantings, especially around Athens, where quality-minded producers now craft textured whites and refined resinated wines. Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Roditis, Agiorgitiko, Limnio, Vradiano and international varieties such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot all find suitable terroirs across the region's many subzones.
