Canelones

Overview

Canelones is Uruguay's largest and most important wine department, accounting for roughly 60 to 65 percent of national production and hosting the majority of its family wineries. Stretching north and northeast of Montevideo across gentle cuchillas, or low ridges, the region has been the historic center of Uruguayan viticulture since the early twentieth century. Its proximity to the capital made it the natural home for multigenerational estates such as Pisano, Pizzorno, Bodega Bouza, Bodega Stagnari, Filgueira and Marichal.

The climate is mild and Atlantic-influenced, with warm summers, cool winters and reliable coastal ventilation that helps control disease pressure. Soils are diverse across the department, ranging from heavy clay-rich loams and calcium-carbonate vertisols to alluvial deposits and pockets of 600-million-year-old pink granite. This combination supports powerful, structured Tannat as well as fresh whites, elegant blends and the country's pioneering Albariño plantings.
