Overview
Bucelas is a small, historic DOC northeast of Lisbon and the only Portuguese appellation dedicated exclusively to white wines. Its reputation dates to at least the 14th century, when Bucelas wine was exported to England; King George III was said to be a fan. The region benefits from a cooler microclimate and calcareous soils.
Arinto is the star, required at a minimum of 75 percent in DOC whites and giving wines with bright citrus fruit, marked acidity, and strong aging potential. Sercial and Rabo de Ovelha add complexity to traditional blends.
