Breedekloof

Overview

Breedekloof covers much of the central Breede River Valley and its tributaries, including the Slanghoek and Goudini wards. Its name means Broad Chasm, reflecting the wide valley carved by the Breede River. Vineyards flourish on flat alluvial terraces with good drainage, resting on beds of river stones that store warmth and reflect heat.

Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay lead white plantings, while Shiraz and Pinotage are the main reds. The district is home to more than 20 wineries along the Breedekloof Wine Route. Its varied river valleys and mountain wards create a range of mesoclimates, allowing producers to craft styles from bright and crisp to rich and full-bodied.
