Bjelopavlići

A fertile plain at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, where the Zeta River shapes structured reds and elegant blends.

Overview

The Bjelopavlići plain is one of Montenegro's most fertile agricultural zones, nourished by alluvial soils carried down by the Zeta River. Vineyards sit on gentle terrain between the Skadar Lake basin and surrounding mountains, creating a moderated continental climate ideal for late-ripening red varieties.

Family cellars and newer estates share the landscape, with Vranac leading plantings followed by Cabernet Sauvignon, Kratošija, and Merlot. The combination of good drainage, retained moisture, and warm summers yields deeply colored reds with rich fruit and firm tannins.

Key Varietals

  • VranacThe dominant local red, expressing the plain's terroir through powerful, dark-fruited wines with firm structure.
  • Cabernet SauvignonAn international variety that blends seamlessly with Vranac to add cassis, cedar, and ageability.
  • KratošijaA historic Montenegrin red contributing bright red fruit, perfume, and approachability to blends.
  • MerlotSoftening the blends with plum and chocolate notes while adding early-drinking appeal.
