Bessarabia

Overview

Bessarabia occupies the southwestern corner of Odesa Oblast, a historic region bordered by Moldova, Romania and the Black Sea. Its continental climate is moderated by proximity to the sea, giving mild winters, warm sunny summers and a long growing season. The gently rolling plains and river valleys are covered with some of Ukraine's most fertile black earth, making the area ideal for both extensive vineyards and high-quality wine production.

The region is renowned for its diverse grape portfolio, blending international varieties with indigenous and Eastern European grapes introduced during Soviet times. Bessarabia's limestone and shell-rock outcrops, combined with its deep chernozems, lend a marked mineral and sometimes saline character to the wines. It is also home to the historic Yalpuh and Prydunaiska Bessarabia geographical indications.
