Overview
Baden is Germany's southernmost and warmest wine region, forming a long L-shape along the Rhine from Lake Constance to Heidelberg and Mannheim. Its climate, classified in the milder EU Zone B, is ideal for Burgundy varieties, and the region is the country's leading producer of Spätburgunder. Diverse landscapes include the volcanic Kaiserstuhl, the limestone slopes of Kraichgau, and the glacial deposits near Lake Constance.
Baden Pinot Noir tends to be richer and darker than elsewhere in Germany, especially from the weathered basalt soils of the Kaiserstuhl, while limestone sites yield more elegant, Burgundian styles. Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder are also important, often barrel-aged for added texture.
