Attica

Overview

Attica is the wine region that wraps around Athens, Greece's capital, with most vineyards lying in the Mesogeia plain southeast of the city. It has a hot, dry Mediterranean climate with low rainfall and a growing season marked by intense sunshine. Despite the heat, calcareous and sandy-loam soils help sustain some of the country's oldest bush-trained Savatiano vines.

For centuries Attica was synonymous with Retsina, the resinated white wine flavoured with Aleppo pine resin. Today a new generation produces serious dry Savatiano, alongside Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Roditis and international varieties, while also crafting modern, restrained Retsinas that highlight rather than mask the grape.
