Artigas

Overview

Artigas is the northernmost winegrowing department in Uruguay, part of the Northern Riverside zone that stretches along the Uruguay River. The region is hotter and more continental than the coastal south, with significant summer warmth and a pronounced influence from the river. Vineyards are small in number but produce grapes with ripe, intense flavors.

Deep soils over sandstone dominate the landscape, retaining enough moisture to sustain vines through warm periods while allowing sufficient drainage. The combination of heat, humidity and long sunlight hours favors rich red wines such as Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which develop deep color and bold aromatics.
