Overview
The Algarve is best known as a tourist destination, but it also produces a small but growing quantity of wine across four DOCs: Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa, and Tavira. Mountains protect the interior from harsh Atlantic winds, while coastal areas benefit from cooling sea breezes and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.
The warm, dry climate favors light, fruity reds and fresh whites. Local grapes such as Castelão, Negra Mole, Arinto, and Manteúdo are joined by international varieties, with increasing quality focus in modern wineries.
Key Varietals
- CastelãoA red variety that gives Algarve wines bright cherry fruit and soft, easy tannins.
- Negra MoleA local red grape producing pale, light-bodied, fruity wines suited to the warm climate.
- ArintoA crisp white grape that retains acidity and citrus freshness in Algarve whites.
- ManteúdoA traditional white variety contributing body and gentle floral fruit to regional blends.
