Overview

The Åland Islands are an autonomous, Swedish-speaking archipelago in the northern Baltic Sea. Their climate is strongly maritime, with cool summers, mild winters by Finnish standards, and high wind exposure that shapes every aspect of agriculture.

Viticulture is extremely limited, but a handful of pioneering plots have been planted on the islands' thin, stony soils. Growers work with hardy hybrids such as Solaris and Rondo, producing tiny quantities of wine that are as much a statement of Nordic ambition as a commercial product.
