Overview
The Aegean Islands span the Aegean Sea from the northern islands of Samos and Lemnos to the Cyclades and Dodecanese in the south. Arid conditions, strong winds, poor soils and minimal water have forced growers to train vines low in goblet or basket shapes for protection. Santorini's volcanic soils are especially prized, hosting ungrafted old vines of Assyrtiko.
The northern islands produce celebrated sweet wines from Muscat Blanc, while the southern islands champion Assyrtiko, Athiri, Aidani, Monemvasia and Mandilaria. The result is a wide palette of styles, from bone-dry, mineral whites to lusciously sweet dessert wines and rare reds shaped by island terroir.
