Aconcagua Region, Chile

Aconcagua

A valley of dramatic contrasts beneath the highest peak in the Americas, producing powerful reds and cool-climate whites.

Overview

Aconcagua Valley runs north of Santiago toward the Pacific coast, with the towering Andes providing a dramatic backdrop. The region spans warm inland sites near the Aconcagua River and cooler coastal areas, allowing producers to make both powerful reds and elegant whites within a compact area.

Errázuriz, one of Chile's oldest and most respected wineries, is based here, along with San Esteban and other historic estates. The valley is best known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from warmer sites, while the Aconcagua Costa sub-zone has gained acclaim for Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Key Varietals

  • Cabernet SauvignonA structured red with blackcurrant, cedar, and mineral depth.
  • SyrahA spicy, full-bodied red that performs well on the valley's warm hillsides.
  • Sauvignon BlancA crisp, herbaceous white from the cooler coastal sector.
  • Pinot NoirAn elegant, red-fruit red from Aconcagua Costa's maritime sites.
