The Rusty Nail
About the Winery
Small family-owned farm winery on a 5.5-acre farm in the Eastern Panhandle, opened in 2019 by Michael and Shelly Crate. Michael didn't drink wine until six years before opening. Wines are made from Frontenac, Diamond, Delaware, Chancellor, and DeChaunac grapes, sourced from New York and West Virginia. They have planted 168 Niagara grapevines and a few Concord vines. Red and white wines ranging from semi-sweet to sweet, plus fruit wines from apples, pears, pineapple, and rhubarb. Featured wines include Devil's Punchbowl (Frontenac and Chambourcin blend), Loralei (soft semi-sweet red), and Uva Bella. Also makes a summer Chardonnay with coconut and lime. Wines are aged in glass carboys, not oak. Family and dog-friendly with two Percheron horses on the property.
