About the Winery

Founded in 1971 on top of Spring Mountain in St. Helena, Smith-Madrone may be the quintessential definition of an artisanal winery. The vines are tended and the small production wines have been made by the same hands for over fifty years. Carved out of a forest, rescuing a vineyard abandoned in the nineteenth century, they farm Riesling, Chardonnay and Bordeaux varietals on steep slopes at 1900 feet elevation with angles up to 35%. Total production is around 5,000 cases annually.
